Lewis has captivated millions by his impromptu singing of the fourth verse of the National Anthem at a Tea Party. Not surprisingly, some commenters believed the event was staged, because the intense, raw talent Lewis has been given by God is truly unbelievable.
The event at the Tea Party was not staged. I know, I was there, and have also, during my afternoon visit with Lewis, been blessed to hear him sing one of his favorite songs. It is our privilege to share it with you. He believes it expresses well how his faith fits together with his patriotism. God Bless America!
We have become accustomed to amplified, heavily synthesized, auto-tuned singing, even at live events. However, Lewis can transport those blessed enough to hear him, by a spiritual energy, without any mechanical props or preparation. The emotional qualities resulting from the valleys of loss and pain he has traveled from his earliest years of childhood, and his long road to peace with God, seems to culminate in an intense quality in his singing, which cannot be counterfeited.
Statue of Liberty
In New York Harbor stands a lady,
With a torch raised to the sky;
And all who see her know she stands for
Liberty for you and me.
I'm so proud to be called an American,
To be named with the brave and the free;
I will honor our flag and our trust in God,
And the Statue of Liberty.
On lonely Golgotha stood a cross,
With my Lord raised to the sky;
And all who kneel there live forever
As all the saved can testify.
I'm so glad to be called a Christian,
To be named with the ransomed and whole;
As the statue liberates the citizen,
So the cross liberates the soul.
Oh the cross is my Statue of Liberty,
It was there that my soul was set free;
Unashamed I'll proclaim that a rugged cross
Is my Statue of Liberty!

Lewis reminded millions who have watched him sing the fourth verse of our National Anthem, that the American patriots who founded our nation, were by and large Christian. They were also supportive of Judaism in our nation, and thus we talk of the Judeo-Christian heritage we enjoy. To remove all doubt of the strong faith held by Francis Scott Key, and his "mixing" of faith and patriotism, consider this devout and beautiful poem:
FOR THE FOURTH OF JULY, 1832.
Before The Lord we bow—
The God who reigns above,
And rules the world below,
Boundless in power and love.
Our thanks we bring,
In joy and praise,
Our hearts we raise
To heaven's high King.
The nation thou hast blest
May well thy love declare,
Enjoying peace and rest,
Protected by thy care.
For this fair land,
For this bright day,
Our thanks we pay—
Gifts of thine hand!
Our fathers sought thee, Lord!
And on thy help relied:
Thou heard'st and gav'st the word,
And all their need supplied.
Led by thy hand to victory.
They hailed a free and rescued land.
God of our sires! that hand
Be now, as then, displayed
To give this favored land
Thy never-failing aid.
Still may it be
Thy fixed abode!
Be thou our God !
Thy people we!
May every mountain height,
Each vale and forest green,
Shine in thy word's pure light,
And its rich fruits be seen!
May every tongue Be tuned to praise,
And join to raise A grateful song!
Earth! hear thy Maker's voice,
The great Redeemer own ;
Believe, obey, rejoice:
Bright is the promised crown.
Cast down thy pride,
Thy sin deplore,
And bow before
The crucified.
And when in power he comes,
O, may our native land,
From all its rending tombs,
Send forth a glorious band!
A countless throng Ever to sing,
To heaven's high King, Salvation's song!
Francis Scott Key
