Is the Federal Government overstepping its bounds? A great deal has been published both for and against Arizona’s Immigration Bill SB1070. I myself have perused over numerous articles looking for pros and cons, trying to find the canker which has some citizens threatening boycotts.

I also took the time needed to read and then re-read the actual Bill: http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2r/bills/sb1070s.pdf

The fact that it is relatively short (17 pages) and fairly easy to comprehend has me asking, “Why is this particular Bill being challenged?” It cannot be because of content. The Bill is fairly straightforward and mirrors the laws already in the books at the Federal level.

Critics say the law, which takes effect later this year, could lead to racial profiling of Latinos and other ethnic minorities. Some Latino and civil rights groups say they plan to challenge the law in court.

And now the Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton has said in an interview with an Ecuadorean television station, "President Obama has spoken out against the law because he thinks that the federal government should be determining immigration policy and the Justice Department, under his direction, will be bringing a lawsuit against the act."

Clinton’s words have angered AZ Governor Jan Brewer. Brewer said in a statement that "This is no way to treat the people of Arizona.”

"To learn of this lawsuit through an Ecuadorean interview with the secretary of state is just outrageous," she said. "If our own government intends to sue our state to prevent illegal immigration enforcement, then the least it can do is inform us before it informs the citizens of another nation."

Many opposing groups say the Arizona law also violates the U.S. Constitution by interfering with federal immigration power and authority.

However Professor Lawrence Alexander, who teaches constitutional law at USD, said that argument would fail because the Arizona law does not conflict with federal immigration law. The state law is only seeking to enforce the federal law.

"I don't see anything in this law that is going to fail a challenge on the grounds of federal supremacy," Alexander said.

From Americans for Legal Immigration: http://www.alipac.us/article5284.html

"Arizona no longer stands alone and we have now documented state lawmakers filing, or announcing they will file, versions of the Arizona bill in seventeen states! We will not stop until all states are protected from invasion as required by the US Constitution."

ALIPAC has documented the following 17 states are following Arizona's lead in response to citizen pressure.

ARKANSAS, IDAHO, INDIANA, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEBRASKA, NEVADA, NEW JERSEY, OHIO, OKLAHOMA, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, SOUTH CAROLINA, TEXAS, UTAH

The people of this nation have stated that the majority are in favor of SB1070 and would support similar legislation in their respective states. So again I ask, “Why is this particular Bill being challenged?”

One is left to merely speculate that our leaders in Washington D.C. are more concerned with the rights of illegal immigrants than the safety of the citizens they swore an oath to serve.

We the people of the United States of America would like to know what the Federal Government is doing to protect us from the onslaught of illegal immigrants? We would also like to know why the Federal Government feels the need to trample the rights of the legal citizens of Arizona who seek to protect their borders.

I am a firm believer in the idea, “If you cannot fix what is broken, move out of the way and let those more competent fix it.” Dear Federal Government, please step aside and let the State of Arizona fix the problem which you have no apparent intention to rectify.
